This week I attended pervasive 2008 at the four points sheritan hotel, in Sydney, Australia.
There were 4 days of events including a day of workshops, two days of conference talks and a day of tutorials.
My paper, SensorMash: Exploring System Fidelity Through Sensor Mashup, was accepted into the late breaking results part of the conference, and for this I had to prepare a poster (Tom's Poster and Erica's Poster) for the poster sessions, and give a one minute madness presentation, where the idea is to get people thinking about your system/theory/thing.
My presentation went well, and there is a video on facebook (I really must get around to adding something to my site to host video - i'll put it somewhere where everyone can see it soon I promise!). I was the 30th out of 31 to present, and as the videos in my slides did not work (PowerPoint 2004 for Mac really sucks!), I was forced to improvise!
I had prepared props for the presentation anyway, which I was going to use during the final video, but as I had no video, I decided to speak instead.
Basically, I had a bag of 'sensors' (printed and rolled pieces of paper), which I plucked out, ripped up and put back into the bag. I then took off my shoe, and bashed the bag with it. This was all meant to symbolise what Sensor Mash does (albeit in a comedy fashion).
For my effort, I was awarded the prize for the best 1 minute madness presentation! Which came in the form of a cricket bat, signed by the chairs of the event! Which was nice :)
I found the workshops, conference and tutorials to be immensly interestings and it has given me a much better idea of how I might be able to fit into the pervasive computing community!

thatsmaboy!!!! Congrats on the cricket bat!! and
well done for doing the presentation without
video - that takes some nerve. At least they'll
all remember you and what you were talking about!
Hope your bags have arrived by now! Hopefully
